Poor women pay for contraception

MANILA, 11 June 2010 (IRIN) - Insufficient public funding for family planning services means poor women have to buy contraceptives from pharmacies rather than getting them free from clinics.

New K+12 program comes under fire

The enhanced K+12 program came under fire on Wednesday, a day after it was unveiled by the Department of Education (DepEd), with Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto 3rd among the first to criticize it. But there were a few who also voiced their support for the proposal.

P110-billion PhilHealth funds idle – senators

SENATORS Ralph Recto and Franklin Drilon questioned Wednesday why the PhilHealth is keeping P110 billion as retained earnings. They asked the question after Rey Aquino, president of PhilHealth, told the Senate Committee on Finance headed by Drilon that PhilHealth has P115 billion in assets and liabilities amounting to P6 billion.

No gag order, says church

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Wednesday said that it had not issued a gag order to effect a ceasefire with Malacañang on the raging issues of artificial contraception and reproductive health, contrary to newspaper reports (none of them from The Manila Times).

Gov’t policy clear, allots P400M for birth control

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Health (DoH) has allotted half of its family health budget for contraceptives, but a number of senators vowed to weed out this allocation from the proposed 2011 budget.
